How the hell are you supposed to get a model from 3d studio max / gmax to railworks , i paid a hell of a lot of money for studio max 9 and i have found the plugins dont work , there is no INI file and the directorys are all wrong , i dont think this is fair on us want-to-be creators. can anyone tell me of an easyer and better way of getting a model into railworks , i have the model built but ive heard you have to unwrap things and such , how do i do this , i have tried the railworks wiki but it gives me a hazardous site warning and i cant get on it , please can someone take the time to give a few pointers , i have some nice models for a route that will be very popular but i cant do anything about it as im in a dead end , i dont want to see my models go to waste

thank you in advance

i just cant do it Icon_biggrin Hi,
The Plugin.ini file location is as per the info in Railworks Art plugins Doc. Without this change to INI file your plugins won't work. Location of INI in XP, should be in your main Autodesk\3DS max folder? something like...C:\programs\autodesk\3dsmax
I use Blender and Gmax, in Windows 7, so cannot help on specific 3DS Max information. Maybe other members can point you to a good 3DS Max Tutorial? It can be a steep learning curve, so you do need, good reference material you can return to when having problems. Hope this helps a little. Regards.

its gmax that im using at the minute , i have imported the model from sketchup and it shows fine , but after that im stuck , tutorials are total jibberish .

do you have the plugins for gmax ?

also do you think you could write up a brief explination of getting it ready to export to railworks , if i can get the railworks wiki to work i will be fine on that part , its just on what i have to do to get it to the export stage

many thanks

i just cant do it Icon_cry Sorry but I use blender for Railworks, with the old plugin, (bit limited) but a new plugin is coming soon? I use Gmax only for exporting FlightSims. I understand that Gmax is similar to 3DSmax and as the Kuju developers use 3DSMax all the plugins and shaders are available for it. If you have 3DSMax this is one way to go? or use Sketchup, convert from Sketchup to 3DSMax and then export to RW?

i think im gunna buy 3D Studio Max 2010 and then export from sketchup to 3D Max , then its a case if figuring it all out, i have a model in the works at the moment that will look very nice in the game , and they were only ever used on my route i think , so i realy want to get it all figured out Very Happy

i just cant do it Icon_smile 3DSMax is very expensive. Henning on Uktrainsim is in the process of finishing a new, all version Blender exporter "Bigex" or just use the old exporter, still ok on earlier Blender versions. Blender is free and very powerful, you could go from Sketchup and then export through Blender? Then, if you wish to, check the Video tutorials on using Blender?

i just cant do it Icon_biggrin Yes, but download an early version, if you want to use the old exporter, 2.47 maybe? Otherwise get later version 2.49c or something and try the old exporter? if no joy, wait for new exporter?
The main trick when using Blender and because one uses the Keyboard and mouse, is WATCH WHERE YOUR MOUSE POINTER is at ALL times. Its window position dictates what effect the keyboard input has!! Its easy to push the mouse aside, as you go to the keyboard, BEWARE! or use Ctrl-Z.
Stay warm, regards.

right , ive got the newest stable blender , and its much better than 3D Canvas and 3D Studio

i noticed you mentiond an exporter , is it far from being done ?

im so willing to create for RW but it just isnt that easy , i mean i can knock up a model in sketchup in no time , but in blender it seams to take ages to move forward , i guess its a learning curve tho

are there any tutorials for getting blender models into railworks and will my blender models work in an older version

many thanks in advance

i just cant do it Icon_smile No Beta available yet. Latest update was 01-02-2010. The continental data style, is to occasionally write the date backwards (as we see it). Keep an eye on that link for latest info. Regards
